Jill Bong
Have you ever had a beloved pet? Jill Bong from Oregon had one, but it wasn’t a dog or cat… it was a chicken named Speck. One day, Speck passed away, leaving the Bong family in mourning.
Many chicken deaths are caused by molting injuries, but they can usually be prevented with a special type of “saddle” or “vest” that is worn by the chicken. Jill designed an innovative saddle using vinyl material so that the vets don’t need to be laundered. Instead, they can easily be wiped clean. After a year of testing, Jill’s Chicken Armor debuted for sale wherever chicken saddles are sold.
Most Chicken ranchers have more than one chicken, so cost is important. A single chicken saddle costs just $2.50 and Jill sells a pack of one hundred for just $75.00. By selling in bulk, Chicken Armor brings in a profit nearing $3,000 every month. Since her company’s launch, Jill has shipped to over fifty states and four continents. She’s been featured in the New York Times, the Associated Press and on ABC News.
Today, Jill continues to scale her business and is open to licensing arrangements. She writes and publishes books concerning self-sufficiency.
